Normal Brain MRI

Grey and white matter are represented in different intensities depending on the MRI sequence. For more explanations of the differences between MRI sequences, please consult the chapters for MRI Sequences.

T1

Grey matter intensity less than white matter.

Ie. Grey matter is slightly darker than white matter.

T2

Grey matter intensity greater than white matter.

Ie. Grey matter is slightly brighter than white matter.

FLAIR

Grey matter intensity > white matter.

Ie. Grey matter is slightly brighter than white matter.

However, in opposition to T2, CSF is attenuated (ie. dark) on FLAIR.

DWI

Grey matter intensity > white matter.

Ie. Grey matter is slightly brighter than white matter.

About

Brain Imaging Essentials is an educational project launched by the students of the La Piana lab aiming to make brain MRIs more accessible for students around the world!

We've created simple, digestible content that will help learners develop a basic understanding of the clinical and research relevance of different kinds of neuroimaging, as well as an approach to brain MRI.
