Brain Imaging Essentials is an educational project launched by the students of the La Piana lab aiming to make brain MRIs more accessible for students around the world!
We've created simple, digestible content that will help learners develop a basic understanding of the clinical and research relevance of different kinds of neuroimaging, as well as an approach to brain MRI.
The course is designed for independent study and covers the following contents: Basic MRI sequences and uses, Neuranatomy 101, Normal Structures in MRI, Pathological Processes in MRI.
For now, the course only features adult brain MRIs but we are working on bringing forward a section on pediatric brain imaging as well!

Brain Imaging Essentials aims to make brain imaging more accessible for academic and medical students worldwide.
This initiative was launched after students from the La Piana Lab found that there was a lack of structured and freely accessible teaching resources on brain imaging on the internet. In a recent survey we developed, we found that most neuroscience and medical students at our university had not had any formalneuroimaging related teaching integrated in their program.
For the most part, neuroimaging training still relies heavily on informal mentorship that can be difficult to access to trainees in a non-imaging specialized program or field.
However, given the increasing importance of neuroimaging in the realms of clinical neurology and neuroscience research, we wanted to create open-opportunities for beginner students across the world with no previous exposure to neuroimaging, to learn the basics of brain imaging on their own time.
To achieve this, we have created Brain Imaging Essentials--a freely accessible online website for a structured training in basic brain imaging.
Furtrhermore, we are working to have Brain Imaging Essentials available in Chinese, English, French, Arabic and Spanish in order to improve accessibility worldwide.
We are an interdisciplinary lab based at the Montreal Neuro focused on researching genetic white matter disorders and their overlap with acquired myelin disorders.
