Hello learner! My name is Joyce, a medical student at McGill (at least at the time of writing this), and the creator of Brain Imaging Essentials.
This course was designed to be a structured beginner’s introduction to neuroradiology after I discovered, in my own journey to learn brain imaging, that resources tended to be scattered and in general, meant for a higher skill level than what I was at when I started.
The suggested order to go through this course would be as follows:
- 1. Basics of MRI modules
- This is where you’ll be introduced to the concept of MRI sequences and all the most common types of sequences we use.
- 2. Neuroanatomy modules
- For those who have recently done neuroanatomy and are confident in their knowledge, feel free to skip this part!
- 3. Normal Brain MRI modules
- This is where you’ll be introduced to how structures appear on a normal MRI. Generally, the images will be in T1 but some will also be presented in FLAIR.
- 4. Pathological Processes
- Instead of showing you how specific diagnoses/diseases appear on imaging, these modules introduce you instead to general pathological processes common between different kinds of diseases, giving you the tools to learn about specific pathologies on your own time.
However, if you’re not so much of a beginner, feel free to approach this course in any order you see fit! You will see that we’ve also provided a Concept Map Page that shows the interconnections between the different modules. By following the arrows, you can target certain information and navigate through sister concepts rather than going through the whole thing.
In any case, the world’s your oyster! We hope BIE will help you on your learning journey in some way.
Sincerely,
Joyce Li
